Course: Get Help With a Child’s Behavior Issue

12. Review and evaluate progress

2 min

As you probably sense, it will be important to review your rules and consequences regularly. You will want to make sure you are remembering to implement them, and you will want to make changes as your teen matures or as your circumstances change. As we mentioned earlier, Special Expectations are meant to be in place only as long as needed for your child to improve their behavior.

Reviewing and Evaluating Your Child’s Progress

Here are some tips for reviewing progress and evaluating when to modify or remove special expectations:

  • Set regular review intervals, like every 1-2 months, to formally assess how things are going.
  • Look at data in the Trustyy app for patterns in consistently met vs. unmet expectations.
  • Discuss with your co-parent and teen what’s working well and what may need adjustment.
  • Consider your teen’s maturity level and if they are showing more self-discipline.
  • For unmet expectations, problem solve together what needs to change.

Tips for Making Changes

  • As behaviors become consistent, incrementally loosen or remove related restrictions.
  • With sustained consistency, you can remove the special expectations entirely
  • If you remove an expectation, explain how you feel they have internalized that skill or value.
  • For expectations still needed, discuss renewing for an additional period of time.

The key is regularly evaluating their progress, having collaborative discussions, and making incremental changes together as needed.

The goal is to help them develop inner discipline to make wise choices on their own. Patience and compassion are so important in this process.
