Every Body Speaks

Did you know that the position of the torso can indicate your approval or the need to distance and avoid someone or something? The front side of your body is the most vulnerable side and is naturally sensitive to things you like and dislike.

A good relationship is manifest in actions such as leaning in, opening your arms for a hug, or sitting closer. A troubled or strained relationship is often seen when arms are folded as a protection, your back is turned, or you lean away. This is just one of the many non-verbal ways we unconsciously communicate our true sentiments.

Try this:
Name one or two people with whom you have a strained relationship.

  • What are my observations of my body language toward them?
  • What body language are they demonstrating to me?
  • How does their body language trigger my emotions?
  • Make some positive adjustments to your body language and see how this affects your relationship.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Tilting Your Head to One Side = I am listening and interested
  • Palms Open and Facing Upward = A sign of openness and honesty
  • Standing Straight With Shoulders Back = Shows confidence
  • Leaning In = You approve of, trust, and are interested in someone
  • Direct Eye Contact = Confidence and trust in a person
  • Head Nodding = I am listening and am agreeable
  • Head and Body Facing the Person = Interest and trust

What are my conclusions about how we could improve our relationship?
